Former Defense Secretary Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. is willing to run as vice president alongside Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte should she decide to run for presidency in 2022.

In an interview on Monday on ANC’s Headstart, Teodoro gladly stated that Sara would be the ideal successor for chief of state due to her independent mind and her experience as mayor.

“She would be a good president if she decides to run and to show that, I’m willing to back her up. I’d gladly be her vice president if she should decide,” Teodoro added.

He is also not looking to run as president or senator since his focus is a potential tandem with Sara Duterte.

The presidential daughter has not confirmed or denied her plans regarding the 2022 elections.

In 2016, President Duterte offered Teodoro the position of defense secretary to which he declined. However, he is now ready to make his political comeback due to the current state of Filipinos amid the global health crisis.

“Wanting to come back because this is a changed world… This is a changed world and the specter of poor people, really, in caskets in India to billionaires waiting for hospital rooms in our country, it is a great equalizer. You have a calling to do your best, to try to help the country,” he stated.

Furthermore, he felt the divide between Filipinos has widened so he is motivated to close the gap to unite the country.

“Our country cannot afford more division, more politicking, and more partisan politics. I think Mayor Sara Duterte has that ability, has that agenda, has that connection to a big, big number of Filipinos,” said Teodoro.

Gibo Teodoro once ran for president during the 2010 elections. He was also the defense secretary under Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2009.
