Out of the 9,081 Asian hate victims in the United States, 9.1 percent or at least 826 are Filipinos, a Stop Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Hate report revealed.

The coalition’s data, released on August 12, covers all incidents reported from March 19, 2020 to June 2021, a majority of which took place outside of the home and in spaces often open to the public such as public streets and businesses.

Stop AAPI Hate said Chinese have reported more hate incidents (43.5 percent) than all ethnic groups, followed by Koreans (16.8 percent), Filipinos (9.1 percent), Japanese (8.6 percent), and Vietnamese (8.2 percent).

Of all hate incidents, at least 48.1 percent included at least one hateful statement regarding anti-China or anti-immigrant rhetoric.

The coalition added that women make up 63.3 percent of all reports.
Verbal harassment and shunning or the deliberate avoidance of AAPI continue to make up the two largest proportions of incidents reported at 63.7 percent and 16.5 percent, respectively.

Physical assault at 13.7 percent, meanwhile, comprises the third-largest category of total reported incidents, followed by being coughed at or spat on 8.5 percent.

In the past few weeks alone, two separate attacks against two Filipinos were reported, prompting renewed calls for the Filipino community to remain vigilant, especially when taking the subway.

On August 7, Filipino stage actor Miguel Braganza was attacked by two individuals while on his way to his apartment in the Upper West Side. He was struck with a gun to the forehead in what police said was a failed robbery attempt.

On August 10, Filipino nurse Potri Ranka Manis was also assaulted while distributing face masks to fellow passengers on board the subway.

The two assailants were reportedly shouting racial slurs while she was being attacked. (PNA)
