VP Leni Stands Strong With LGBTQIA+ Community

With the impeccable timing of coinciding with last Saturday’s Pride March, VP Leni Robredo released a statement of solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community, whether Filipino or international.

Since Robredo has always been an advocate of human rights, she is also a supporter of gender equality; according to her statement, all those who aspire “for a world free from hate and discrimination” are joined together in the celebration of Pride Month. Diversity should not be cause for division, as personal differences can be overcome by openness and respect.

Given this, Robredo rallies against discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation and gender indentity, stressing the primacy of daily interactions as well as legislation. The Vice President cited the Anti-Discrimination Bill, which was created to protect Filipino members of LGBTQIA+ community against sex- and gender-based discrimination, providing the community with equal economic opportunities and public accomodation. According to Robredo, an inalienable fact of human identity is “respect for the dignity of others and equality of rights for all”: regardless of differences, all people can thus stand together with pride and dignity, free from fear.

Though Robredo concluded her statement with “the energy, the commitment, the courage, and the love” present every Pride Month, it is lamentable that the Anti-Discrimination Bill failed to be approved by the Senate last June 4, even though the bill had been backed by 198 members of the House of Representatives in 2017.

Nonetheless, the Vice President adheres to her belief that the Filipino people will still strive to make these ideals of equality real.
