Lawyer and senatorial aspirant Alexander “Alex” Ledesma Lacson announced his plans to revive the Negros Island Region (NIR) once elected.

The NIR was created by Executive Order (EO) by the late President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, but was later abolished when it was not given a budget by the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte when he assumed office in 2016.

Lacson, who comes from Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, explained that the only way to pass the NIR into law is through Congress so the Department of Budget and Management will provide a budget for it.

The lawyer said he will push for the NIR creation and revive the law once elected as a senator. He also pledged support to the grant of a P2 billion fund component for the Sugarcane Industry Development Act (SIDA), which was reduced to only P 267 million last year. He said that with SIDA, sugar farmers would receive subsidies to protect them from the impact of skyrocketing prices of fertilizers.

Lacson is among the 12 senatorial candidates of presidential aspirant and current Vice President Leni Robredo and her vice-presidential candidate Senator Francisco “Kiko” Pangilinan. He is in Negros Occidental today until 6.
