Nagpahayag ang Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) ng suporta sa hakbang ni Senator Francis Tolentino na gawing institusyonal ang terminong West Philippine Sea sa hangaring palakasin ang pag-angkin ng bansa sa pinagtatalunang lugar.

Sa isang press conference, sinabi ni DFA spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza na anumang pagsisikap na magpapalakas sa kaso ng Pilipinas sa South China Sea, basta’t alinsunod sa United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) at hindi nakakasira sa 2016 Arbitral Award ay isang bagay na maaaring isaalang-alang at suportahan ng estado.

“The West Philippine Sea was already actually defined in 2012 through Administrative Order 29,” sabi ni Daza

“Nevertheless, the department recognizes what the process of legislation can do in terms of clarity and institution building. And we look forward to supporting the process, should we be invited to do so,” dagdag nito.

Sa ilalim ng Senate Bill No. 405 ni Tolentino, ang maritime area — kabilang ang air space, seabed, at subsoil — sa kanlurang bahagi ng Pilipinas ay pinangalanang “West Philippine Sea” o “Kanlurang Dagat ng Pilipinas” bilang bahagi ng “likas na karapatan ng bansa na italaga ang mga pangalan ng mga maritime area nito,” at naaayon sa 2016 Award ng Arbitral Tribunal ng Permanent Court of Arbitration.

Sinasaklaw nito ang Luzon Sea gayundin ang tubig sa paligid, sa loob, at katabi ng Kalayaan Island Group at Scarborough Shoal.

Ang iminungkahing panukala ay nag-uutos din sa mga tanggapan ng pamahalaan na gamitin ang termino sa lahat ng komunikasyon, mensahe, at pampublikong dokumento, at “upang gawing popular ang paggamit ng naturang pangalan sa pangkalahatang publiko, kapwa sa loob ng bansa at internasyonal.”
