Matapos ang recommendation ng Inter-Agency Task Force of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) na gawing optional na ang pagsusuot ng face mask sa mga open at di crowded na lugar, iminungkahi ni Iloilo City First District Representative Janette Garin sa Department of Health (DOH) ang pag-preposition ng mga antivirals kontra Covid-19 bilang preparation sa posibleng pagtaas ng moderate at severe cases.

Ayon sa kanya, dahil sa pandemic fatigue ng mga tao na nagtutulak sa kanilang mag-agree sa optional face mask policy, kasabay dapat nito ang increased readiness lalo na kung may mangyari mang pagtaas ng cases.

Isa sa mga paghahanda na ito ang pag-preposition ng antivirals na medication ng mga pasyente kontra Covid-19.

“We need to take this with a grain of salt. With the lifting of the mask mandate, it is imperative that the Department of Health preposition antivirals so that the burden of health expenditure for moderate and severe cases will not be passed on to the people” sabi ng former Health secretary.

Pabor ang mambabatas sa pagpapatupad ng optional face mask policy, ngunit aniya ay dapat simulan lamang ito kapag narating na ng bansa ang 70 percent threshold ng total na porsyento ng populasyon na bakunado na ng booster shots kontra Covid-19.

Ang threshold na ito ay malayo-layo pa bago maabot ayon sa data ng DOH, pagkat nasa 21.76 percent o 17 million pa lamang ang nabakunahan ng unang booster shot. Samantala, nasa 92.31 percent na o 72 milyong Pilipino ang fully vaccinated o ang mga nakatanggap ng initial na dalawang shots ng bakuna. 

“It is a fact that the definition of a fully vaccinated person has been compromised by the Delta and Omicron variants. Waning immunity or the protection from the original shots has begun to decline”

Dagdag pa ni Garin, napatunayan nang epektibo ang face mask sa pagpapabagal ng virus transmission matapos niyang balikan ang papel nito sa 2003 outbreak ng Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

Dagdag pa niya, lumabas sa isang pag-aaral mula Microbiology Department ng University of Hongkong na bumababa ng hanggang 75 percent ang coronavirus transmission rate sa pamamgitan ng respiratory droplets o airborne particles kapag nakasuot ng face mask.

Lumabas din sa findings nito na ang mga nakasuot ng face mask ngunit tinamaan pa rin ng infection ay mas kaunti ang virus sa katawan kumpara sa mga nahawa na walang suot na mask. 

Nailathala ang research na ito sa Clinical Infectious Diseases Medical Journal.

“Put on masks, they actually protect other people especially when masks are worn by infected asymptomatic individual” huling saad ni Garin na nagpayong magsuot pa rin ng face mask kahit pa optional na ito habang ongoing pa ang booster shot drive ng DOH.
