Nakatanggap ng suporta mula kay Senador Francis Tolentino ang planong pagpapaliban ng barangay at Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections na magaganap dapat sa Disyembre ng taong ito.

Si Senador Imee Marcos, na namumuno sa Committee on Electoral Reforms and People’s Participation, ang nagsusulong ng Senate Bill No. 1306, na kinabibilangan ng pagpapaliban ng nasabing mga eleksyon.

Ang barangay at SK elections ay balak gawin sa unang linggo ng Disyembre 2023, magpapahaba sa mandato ng mga kasalukuyang opisyal ng isa pang taon, ayon kay Marcos, na nag-sponsor ng panukalang batas.

Sa isang pahayag, binigyang-diin ni Tolentino, ang vice chair ng nabanggit na komite, na ang kagyat na pangangailangang repormahin ang ilang dekada nang Local Government Code (LGC), na kilala rin bilang Republic Act No. 7160, ang pangunahing dahilan na nag-uudyok sa kanyang suporta para sa pagpapaliban. Nagkabisa ang LGC noon pang 1991.

Iginiit ni Tolentino, na nagsilbi bilang alkalde ng Tagaytay City sa loob ng tatlong magkakasunod na termino, na ang pag-aamyenda ng LGC ay mangangailangan ng pagsasaayos sa mga tungkulin ng mga indibidwal na nakalista dito. 

“I am in favor of a one-year postponement of the barangay [and sangguniang] kabataan elections because it will pave the way for the revision, the long awaited revision of the Local Government Code. And Mr. President, the time of one year would probably be sufficient enough for our barangay officials to lead in the grassroots level, the post-pandemic economic recovery envisioned by our President in the national government,” aniya.
