The Philippine National Police said Sunday that New Year revelries were generally peaceful and safe.

PNP Public Information Office chief Col. Red Maranan said no significant cases were reported during the celebrations except for the two incidents of indiscriminate firing in Iloilo and Quezon City.

A member of the Philippine Coast Guard and one civilian were arrested for those incidents.

Also in Iloilo City, one was reportedly hurt after he was hit by a stray bullet. The suspect was immediately arrested.

In Metro Manila, National Capital Region Police Office chief Maj. Gen. Jonnel Estomo said the celebration of New Year was generally peaceful when it posted zero injury from firecracker-related incidents.

“These positive developments could be attributed to our early preparations and consistent implementation of various measures,” he added.

The ban on the use and sale of firecrackers and pyrotechnics also contributed to the campaign, the Metro Manila top cop said.

NCRPO arrested seven violators of the firecracker ban, two violators in illegal discharge of firearms, and confiscated firecrackers worth PHP1,208,710 in the entire region.

Meanwhile, the PNP said it is still coordinating with the Department of Health regarding the number of fireworks-related incidents.

The PNP will remain on full alert until Jan. 6. (PNA)
