Senator Christopher Lawrence Go on Friday lauded President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for ordering the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to hunt down alleged onion cartels as well as the smuggling and hoarding of agricultural products.

“I commend President Marcos for his decisive action to address the issue of hoarding, smuggling, and price fixing of agricultural commodities,” Go said in a statement. “These unlawful practices have severe consequences for our farmers and the general public, particularly the poor.”

“It is crucial to hold those responsible accountable for their actions. Our farmers work hard to provide for our nation, and they should not be exploited by unscrupulous individuals seeking to profit at their expense. We must ensure that justice is served,” he added.

He urged concerned government agencies to work together in ensuring a comprehensive and efficient investigation to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.

“We must work together to protect our farmers, stabilize prices, and safeguard the welfare of our consumers,” Go said.

Following the President’s order, the DOJ immediately created an Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Task Force which includes the Bureau of Customs and the Department of Agriculture.

It is also set to form a special team of prosecutors that will primarily focus on protecting the entire agricultural sector. (PNA)
