Future Of Democracy! OFW Partylist Nakiisa Sa Internet Voting Demonstration

Nakiisa ang OFW Partylist sa isinagawang internet voting demonstration na inorganisa ng Commission on Elections (COMELEC) para sa papalapit na 2025 midterm elections. 

Ang demonstration ay naaayon sa adbokasiya ng OFW partylist at COMELEC upang gawing mas madali at madaling maabot ang pagboto para sa mga overseas workers, partikular sa mga overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). 

Walong technology providers mula sa iba’t-ibang bansa ang nagpresenta ng kanilang proposals sa mga opisyal ng COMELEC, ang mga kumpanyang ito ay: Miru, Smartmatic, Dermalog, Indra, E-Corp, Tambuli Labs, at Thales. Iniharap nila ang kani-kanilang proseso mula sa log in, voting, encryption, at data transfer. Pinangunahan ito nina Chairperson George Erwin Garcia at Commissioner Marlon Casquejo, na namumuno sa Office for Overseas Voting ng komisyon. 

Tinugunan din ng mga providers ang mga concerns sa security at authentication, pati na rin ang best practices mula sa mga bansang nakapagpatupad na ng internet voting, tulad ng Estonia.  Ang OFW Partylist at iba pang panelists ay naglabas din ng mga katanungan upang bigyang linaw ang tungkol sa pagsama ng online registration at canvassing of votes, halaga ng buong proyekto, at nang madaling maunawaan ang end-user communication.

Ikinatuwa at ipinagmalaki naman ni OFW Partylist Rep. Marissa “Del Mar” Magsino ang pagiging bahagi ng groundbreaking initiative na ito at ang malaking development sa kanilang adbokasiya na internet o electronic voting. Nagpahayag din siya ng pasasalamat sa pagpupursige ng COMELEC sa adhikaing makalahok ang OFWs sa electoral process at makaboto sa pamamagitan ng internet voting, lalo na para sa mga sea-based OFWs, bilang problema ng mga OFW ang pagrehistro at pagboto tuwing eleksyon dahil sa limitasyon sa kanilang lugar o schedule sa trabaho

“…Ngayong araw ay nakita na natin ang konkretong plano ng technology providers at ang malaking posibilidad na ito’y maisagawa sa 2025 elections. We’re finally stepping into the future of democracy!” saad pa niya. 

“We fully support the innovations being taken by COMELEC and respect their stand that current laws allow for internet voting. However, to prevent any legal impediments that may derail this endeavor later on, we will pursue our proposed legislation. This will be a parallel effort of the OFW Party List to ensure that internet voting will be a reality for the 1.8 million overseas voters by 2025 on top of supporting the allocations for the project in the budget deliberations for FY 2024 and years therafter.”
