President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has appointed lawyer Marius Corpus as the new head of the Governance Commission for Government-Owned and Controlled Corporations (GCG).

Corpus’ appointment was announced in a Facebook post by the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) on Friday.

Corpus worked as an undersecretary at the Department of the Interior and Local Government for Public Safety under the leadership of former president Benigno Aquino III.

He will be joined by lawyer Brian Keith Hosaka as a GCG member, the PCO also announced.

Before his new appointment, Hosaka served as spokesperson and chief of the Supreme Court Public Information Office.

Created by virtue of Republic Act 10149 or the GOCC Governance Act of 2011, the GCG serves as the central advisory, monitoring and oversight body that formulates, implements and coordinates policies to govern GOCCs.

The GCG has jurisdiction over 118 GOCCs, which excludes the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), local water districts, and research institutions.

Among the GOCCs that are under the GCG’s jurisdiction are the National Food Authority, Social Security System, Government Service Insurance System, Sugar Regulatory Administration, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, Land Bank of the Philippines, Development Bank of the Philippines, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, and the Clark Development Corp.

The agency is mandated to safeguard the government’s rights and ensure that GOCCs’ operations remain transparent and responsive to the government’s bid to provide services to the public.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court (SC) congratulated Hosaka for his appointment.

The SC, in its statement, said Hosaka ” was instrumental in ushering several initiatives that have further enhanced the dissemination of information about the Court and its activities, thus bringing the Courts closer to the public.”

He previously served as spokesperson under three chief justices– retired Chief Justice and now Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin, retired Chief Justice Diosdado M. Peralta, and Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo. (PNA)
