Sen. Imee Marcos is eyeing an amendment to the law governing the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan, specifically on the number of years per term and the number of the youth representatives per locality.

“Di alam kung term ba ay three years or six years. Kasi wala na kami ginawa kundi mag-extend ng mag-extend ng term kaya mainam siguro repasuhin kung talaga bang three years yong barangay o pwedeng five to six years kasi parati naman extend (We cannot be sure if their term is three years or six years. What we always do is to extend and extend their terms so it would be better if we revisit the law whether the term of the officials be three years or maybe we could change it to five to six years since we extend nonetheless),” said Marcos in a press conference on Monday in this town.

She added that the extended term of the officials also affected the SK officials who have either grown overage as a youth representative or have moved out of the barangay to work or study somewhere else.

“For the SK, we should think of a system wherein there will only be one representative per barangay,” she said.

She said it would be better to just have one representative per barangay instead of the current eight members of an SK council in every barangay.

“Ang stand ko kasi di naman mabuo konseho sa barangay level lalo sa malillit na barangay [kasi] halos lahat magkakamag anak eh (My stand is that there is actually no council in the barangay level in small villages since most of them are relatives),” she added.

Marcos was the first national chairman of the Kabataang Barangay, which was created in 1975 and aims to give the youth an opportunity to express their views and representation. (PNA)
