Sumabog ang mainit na rebelasyon mula kay dating Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III nitong Huwebes: pwedeng simulan na sa 19th Congress ang impeachment trial laban kay Vice President Sara Duterte.

Sa isang press conference ng administrasyong Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas senatorial slate sa Dumaguete City, ibinulgar ni Sotto na may ilang senador na naniniwalang hindi na kailangang hintayin ang 20th Congress para sa impeachment proceedings—taliwas sa sinabi ni Senate President Francis Escudero.

“Kasi nakausap ko ‘yong ibang mga senador, hindi ganoon ang sinasabi,” pagbubunyag ni Sotto. “Puwede raw i-take up.”

Seryoso At Konstitusyonal Na Mandato

Binigyang-diin ni Sotto ang bigat ng impeachment trial at ang kahalagahan ng kahandaan ng Senado, kung sakaling simulan na ito.

“Of course, it is a constitutional mandate and therefore it is serious,” ani Sotto. “Definitely, we need to be prepared as we have prepared in the past. Are you sure that it will be the 20th Congress because they can take it up now if they want?”

Ayon pa kay Sotto, noong natanggap ng Senado ang articles of impeachment noong Pebrero 5, maaari na sanang umaksyon ang mga mambabatas.

“It’s a pity because I think if they referred it to the body during the time they received the transmittal, they could have conducted hearings by the committee on rules during the break,” aniya.

Dagdag pa niya, “They could have convened if they wanted to by June 2 or even before they convene themselves as an impeachment court.”

Escudero: Wala Munang Impeachment Sa Break

Naunang sinabi ni Senate President Francis Escudero na malamang magsisimula lamang ang impeachment trial matapos ang ikaapat na State of the Nation Address (SONA) ni Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. sa Hulyo.

Ayon kay Escudero, walang trial na magaganap habang nasa congressional break ang Senado, lalo na’t pito sa mga senador ay abala sa kanilang reelection campaign.

Lacson: Hindi Puwedeng Madaliin

Sa parehong press conference, sinabi rin ni dating senador Panfilo Lacson na siguradong lalampas ng kasalukuyang Kongreso ang impeachment trial dahil sa haba ng due process.

“Hindi naman puwedeng tapusin ng isang linggo. Dahil kangaroo court naman ang labas no’n,” diin ni Lacson.

Tolentino: Supreme Court Ang Magpapasiya?

Samantala, ayon kay Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino, posibleng dumulog sa Korte Suprema upang matukoy kung dapat nga bang sa 19th Congress lamang ang hurisdiksyon ng impeachment trial.

“It’s a case perhaps, in a few weeks’ time, would be ripe for adjudication,” ani Tolentino.
