The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is aiming for at least a 65-percent voter turnout in the special election for the 2nd District of Antipolo City on Saturday.

Comelec chairperson George Garcia said the poll body hopes turnout could reach as high as 70 percent of the district’s 252,793 registered voters.

“We hope we can reach 65 to 70 percent. This is reasonable and practical, and I hope we can reach it,” Garcia said in an interview.

Garcia expressed confidence the target could be met after March 14 was declared a special non-working day in the district to encourage voter participation.

“We have also seen the cooperation from the local government unit in encouraging our people to vote. This is important,” he added.

At the same time, Garcia reminded voters that six candidates remain in the race for the district’s seat in the House of Representatives.

The candidates are Bong Acop, Dandin Infante, Reden Llaga, Maria Trinidad Cafirma, Nathaniel Lobigas and Irvin Paulo Tapales.

“There are still six candidates for representative… the one reported to be disqualified is fake news,” Garcia said.

He said a case filed against Acop remains pending before the poll body.

“There is a case filed before us. We will still have to ask the filer if what he filed is an election offense or disqualification,” he added.

A special election will be held in Antipolo following the death of Rep. Romeo Acop on Dec. 20, 2025. (PNA)
