The city government of Calbayog in Samar launched on Friday an online registry portal aimed at strengthening communication and support for its residents working overseas, particularly those in the Middle East.
The i-Konek Calbayog Registry Portal is designed to build a comprehensive database of Calbayog residents working abroad, enabling the local government to quickly reach them during emergencies.
The initiative, developed by the local planning and development office and supported by Mayor Raymund Uy and Vice Mayor Rex Daguman, allows authorities to send timely advisories, updates, and information on assistance programs.
“It is especially intended to assist residents in areas experiencing humanitarian crises and unrest, as part of broader efforts to enhance the protection and welfare of the city’s migrant workers,” the city government said in a statement.
Initial data show that at least 210 Calbayog residents currently living or working in the Middle East have already registered on the platform.
Beyond emergency response, the registry also aims to keep overseas residents connected to local government programs and development initiatives, allowing them to remain engaged in the cultural, social, and economic life of their hometown despite being abroad.
Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) acting Regional Director Lovely Aissa Velayo-Agliam lauded the initiative, calling the registry a “very welcome” development.
She said the agency regularly coordinates with Public Employment Service Offices and OFW help desks in addressing concerns involving migrant workers, and expressed hope that other local government units will adopt similar initiatives.
Based on consolidated data from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Calbayog City has a total of 3,057 residents working abroad. Of this number, 1,004 are active OWWA members, while 2,053 are inactive. Of the total, 2,489 are land-based, 549 are sea-based, and 19 have unspecified classifications. (PNA)
