President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday affirmed the national government’s respect for the Bangsamoro Parliament’s authority to choose its leaders following the formation of a 46-member majority coalition after the region’s first parliamentary elections last month.
Marcos congratulated the 80 newly elected members of the Bangsamoro Parliament, describing the polls as a milestone in the Bangsamoro people’s pursuit of self-governance and lasting peace.
“We respect Parliament’s authority to determine its leadership in accordance with the Bangsamoro Organic Law,” Marcos said.
The majority coalition has signaled its intention to form the region’s Government of the Day through the parliamentary process.
Marcos said the national government recognized the coalition’s formation and would work with the government formally constituted by parliament.
He also underscored the importance of respecting the Bangsamoro people’s aspiration for genuine autonomy, saying it remains central to the peace process.
The national government, he added, would continue supporting a strong, autonomous and peaceful Bangsamoro, with emphasis on peace, stability and inclusive development.
The 80 newly elected members of the Bangsamoro Parliament are scheduled to assume office on Oct. 30 and organize the region’s parliamentary government, including the election of its first full-fledged chief minister. (PNA)
