Concerned banking and financial institutions have until Sept. 2 to turn over peso-denominated records involving Vice President Sara Duterte, her husband Manases Carpio and 20 entities linked to the couple, under a fresh directive from the Senate impeachment court.

Presiding Officer Francis “Chiz” Escudero issued the seven-calendar-day deadline Wednesday as the court adopted the same limitations it imposed in its July 20 ruling on subpoenas for financial records.

“The request for subpoena directed to the concerned banking institutions… and financial institutions covering the respondent, her spouse, Attorney Manases Carpio, as well as 20 entities allowed by this court in which the spouses hold an interest is hereby granted,” Escudero said.

He clarified that the order covers only peso-denominated accounts and excludes foreign currency deposits unless the depositor gives written consent.

The institutions were directed to produce the requested documents before the Clerk of Court within seven calendar days, or by Wednesday next week.

Defense lead counsel Sheila Sison placed on record that Duterte’s camp was reserving its right to raise appropriate objections and pursue available remedies over the subpoenaed records.

The latest order builds on the impeachment court’s July 20 ruling allowing access to certain financial records connected to Duterte as senator-judges examine evidence presented in the impeachment case.

PSA Records, Official Lined Up For Next Week

Meanwhile, Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) records are set to figure next week after prosecutors moved to present additional documents and a PSA official before the Senate impeachment court.

Escudero granted the prosecution’s request to subpoena PSA official Marissa Grande for Sept. 2.

“In order to maximize the schedule that is given to us by the Honorable Impeachment Court for September 2, that is next Wednesday, Your Honor, we would like to respectfully move for the issuance of subpoena ad testificandum to Attorney Michael Wesley T. Poa, if the same should be necessary, as well as to Ms. Marissa B. Grande of the Philippine Statistics Authority,” House lead prosecutor Rep. Gerville Luistro of Batangas said.

The prosecution was likewise allowed to hold a conference for the marking of additional exhibits, particularly documents received from the PSA, with both camps directed to send representatives.

Sison then sought the same opportunity to prepare additional documentary exhibits for Duterte’s camp.

“We would like to avail of the same opportunity. And if the situation calls for it, we will ask for an additional setting for conference to mark additional documents in preparation for our presentation,” Sison said.

Escudero granted the defense request, subject to the availability of the parties and the Clerk of Court.

The prosecution did not specify during the exchange what particular issue Grande’s testimony and the additional PSA records are intended to establish.

The trial resumes Sept. 1, with Lt. Col. Manaros Boransing II and Col. Panopio among the prosecution witnesses expected to appear. (PNA)
