President Rodrigo Duterte said the Philippines avoided another surge in Covid-19 cases due to continued vaccination and adherence to minimum public health standards.

In a prerecorded public address on Monday, Duterte again praised his administration’s success in containing the Covid-19 pandemic.

If I were to judge myself, the one single thing that my government did was to contain Covid-19 in a very much earlier span of time. And to think na yung iba sa ngayon nagkaroon ng surge [And to think other countries now experience] simply because maybe the citizens of that country do not want to follow regulations. E tayo dito, sabi ko, takot [Here in our country, I thought people are afraid],” he said.

Duterte also commended Filipinos’ compliance with Covid-19 health protocols, which allowed for continued economic recovery as employees return to on-site work.

Meanwhile, he urged healthcare workers to help identify Filipinos who have yet to be immunized.

“‘Yung hinahanap natin yung itong mga [We seek to reach the] vulnerable o kaya ng may mga edad na na hindi nakakalabas at ‘di pa naiinjeksyunan [or those who are old and cannot go out to be vaccinated], if we can manage to find them,” he said.

As of writing, more than 69 million Filipinos have been vaccinated against Covid-19, an estimated 77.2 percent of the 90 million target.

The Department of Health reported that a total of 1,295 new infections were logged from May 30 to June 5 with an average of 185 daily cases, 1.4 percent lower than the previous week’s daily infections.

Earlier, Tokyo-based news publication Nikkei Asia ranked the Philippines 33rd in the Covid-19 Recovering Index, noting the country’s management of restrictions while keeping infections low.

Gratitude to China

Duterte also thanked China for providing the country with its first batch of vaccines while other countries were hoarding their doses.

“We started with zero. We were just floating, waiting for the next thing to happen. And maski anong sabihin ng iba [Regardless of what will be said by others] and other nations, we would like to reiterate again our gratitude to China,” he said.

In March 2021, the Philippines launched its Covid-19 vaccination drive using China’s Sinovac-CoronaVac.
