House prosecutors in Vice President Sara Z. Duterte’s Senate impeachment trial on Tuesday vowed to do their job regardless of its possible impact on their candidacies in the 2028 elections.

During a news conference at the House of Representatives, members of the prosecution team were asked whether they were concerned about the potential effect of prosecuting the Vice President on their chances in the next elections.

“Hindi po kami nababahala (We are not concerned),” Rep. Ysabel Maria Zamora, who is serving her second term as representative of the lone district of San Juan City in Metro Manila, said.

Zamora said she and other members of the prosecution team would fulfill their constitutional duty to prosecute the Vice President in her impeachment trial.

“We are fulfilling our constitutional duty as House prosecutors, as congressmen, as representatives of our constituents. And lahat po kami ay nandito para lang ipakita ang ebidensiya laban sa Bise Presidente na nakita naming may pagkakasala. Kayo nga po naglabas po tayo ng articles of impeachment (We are all here to show the evidence against the Vice President who we saw was guilty of an offense. That’s why we came out with the articles of impeachment),” she said.

Zamora said they are not afraid of any adverse sentiments they may face in the next elections because the people and senator-judges will see the evidence they have against the Vice President during her Senate trial.

“It is now incumbent upon the senators to fulfill their constitutional duty as well,” she added.

Batangas Rep. Gerville “Jinky Bitrics” Luistro, who head the prosecution panel, echoed Zamora’s statement.

“We are free to elect our leaders. But please understand the 11 prosecutors, we are simply responding to a constitutional duty. As a matter of fact, with all due respect to our constituents, this is not a question of, natutuwa ba sila o hindi, gusto ba nila o hindi (if they are happy or not, if they wanted this or not). This is a duty we really have to face,” Luistro said. (PNA)
