Senator Imee Marcos expressed optimism that the 2022 elections would have the highest voter turnout in Philippine history after learning that COMELEC is taking a swift action to issue a resolution that will extend voter registration by one month.
“Vox Populi, Vox Dei. The more voters, the louder the voice of the people and of God in next year’s elections. Director Elnas (Teopisto Jr.) has confirmed that the commissioners en banc will get the resolution done tomorrow,” Marcos said.
Marcos, who chairs the Senate committee on electoral reforms and people’s participation, lauded the immediate action of COMELEC to pass a resolution that will override the original deadline for voter registration originally due on September 31, 2021.
As of August 2021, the COMELEC has reported more than 61 million new and returning registered voters. However, 12 million more eligible Filipinos are expected to register now that the voter registration is extended. Due to health and safety protocols, there are limited daily slots for registration but voters continue to flock COMELEC’s satellite centers to be able to exercise their right to vote next year.
