‘MAHIYA NAMAN KAYO!’ Nancy Nagbabala, Mental Health Excuse ‘Wag Abusuhin

Pinalagan na ni Senador Nancy Binay ang paulit-ulit na paggamit sa mental health bilang rason para makaiwas ang ilang personalidad kagaya na lamang ni Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo, na humarap sa mga Senate hearing.

“There has been a concerning trend attempting to use mental health as a way to avoid appearing before the Senate. Ang ayaw po nating mangyari ay magamit ang Senado, at maging precedent,” aniya sa isang Senate hearing.

Ang pahayag ni Binay ay kasunod ng liham mula sa abogado ni Guo, na humihiling na huwag ipatawag si Guo sa isinasagawang imbestigasyon sa mga illegal na Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) dahil sa health at mental concerns.

“Ang sa akin lang, nakakahiya naman po doon sa mga tunay na may mental health condition. I just would like to reiterate na seryosong usapin ang mental health at hindi ito dapat na ginagamit na dahilan para magsinungaling.” 

Ipinunto niya na ang hindi pagharap ni Guo sa Senado ay nagmumungkahi na ang mental health ay maaaring manipulahin bilang isang legal shield, na posibleng humahantong sa higit pang stigmatization sa mga mental health condition.

“Perhaps in the forthcoming hearings, the Senate can designate a government psychologist and psychiatrist to validate medical reports or certifications. Unless there is substantial proof of a severe and incapacitating condition, the state-appointed medical professional can make recommendations to the committee whether or not to require the resource person to appear.” 

Idinagdag niya na ang paggamit ng mental health condition upang makaiwas sa legal na responsibilidad ay hindi lamang nakakasira sa buong proseso ng Senate inquiry, kundi pati sa pagpapatuloy ng stigma laban sa mga tunay na may mental health issues.

Sa huli, binigyang-diin ni Binay ang kahalagahan ng pagkakaroon ng balanse sa mga ganitong usapin upang maiwasan ang pag-abuso sa mental health issues.
