President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has yet to name the new commissioner of the Bureau of Immigration (BI), Malacañang announced Monday.

Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles made this remark following reports that lawyer Abrahan Espejo Jr., a former dean of the College of Law of the New Era University, has been appointed as BI commissioner.

“No appointment has yet been made to the position of Immigrations Commissioner,” Cruz-Angeles said in a press statement.

She said her office has confirmed with the Presidential Management Staff (PMS), which conducts complete staff work on such appointments, that no document for the said position has been issued.

In July, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla appointed BI chief of the Immigration Regulation Division Rogelio Gevero Jr. as officer-in-charge commissioner of the immigration bureau.

Gevero replaced BI Commissioner Jaime Morente, who was appointed by former President Rodrigo Duterte in July 2016.

Gevero will lead the agency until a new commissioner is designated this year.

His appointment is in line with Memorandum Circular No. 1 which declares vacant certain positions in the departments, offices, agencies, and bureaus in the Executive department to ensure the continued effective delivery of service. (PNA)
