Kinondena ng mga senador ang panibagong kaso ng pagkamatay ng isang estudyante dahil sa hazing.

Nagbigay ng pahayag sina Senador Sherwin Gatchalian, Risa Hontiveros, Migz Zubiri, at Jinggoy Estrada matapos maiulat ang pagkamatay ng mag-aaral sa Adamson University na si John Matthew Salilig. Natagpuan ang bangkay ng mag-aaral sa isang bakanteng lote sa Imus City, Cavite noong Martes, Pebrero 28. 

Ayon sa imbestigasyon, si Salilig ay dumalo sa initiation rites ng Tau Gamma Phi fraternity sa Laguna noong Pebrero 18 at iniulat na nawawala sa parehong araw.

Isinaad ni Gatchalian ang pagkabahala sa insidente ng hazing. Binanggit din niya na wala dapat itong lugar sa lipunan.

“Nakakabahala at nakakagalit na bagama’t mayroon na tayong batas upang masugpo ang hazing, ang Anti-Hazing Act (Republic Act No. 8049, as amended by Republic Act No. 11053), nagpapatuloy pa rin ang ganitong karahasan. While the Adamson University has initiated its investigation and the Tau Gamma Phi’s Triskelion Council of Imus City has vowed openness to collaborate with the bereaved family, it is crucial that we stay vigilant until justice is served and those involved are held fully accountable,” isinaad ni Gatchalian.

Kinondena rin ni Hontiveros ang karahasan na hinarap ng mag-aaral at binanggit na dapat panagutin ang mga sangkot sa nasabing krimen.

“Too many Filipinos have suffered from hazing and other forms of violence. We should proactively implement the Anti-Hazing Law and other regulations so that we can ensure that our schools and universities will not be havens for hazing and other forms of violent and regressive activities,” aniya.

Kinuwestiyon naman ni Zubiri ang kultura ng hazing sa mga fraternity, at binanggit niya rin na hindi dapat ito pinahihintulutan.

“The culture of secrecy in the guise of fraternal “brotherhood” is abhorrent, and each and every single person involved–from those who planned, those who participated, even those who were just present but did nothing to stop the hazing–should be thrown in jail as well. Under our law they are all responsible,” isinaad ng mambabatas.

Ayon naman kay Estrada, may sapat na ngipin ang Republic Act 11053 para panagutin ang mga may sala sa insidente. 

“I call on the law enforcers to round up all those involved and privy to the case and hold them accountable to the law. Hindi man maibabalik ang nasayang na buhay ni John Matthew, maaaring makapagligtas tayo ng iba pa sa hinaharap at maisaisip ng mga miyembro ng mga fraternities, sororities at iba pang katulad na organisasyon na ang mga gawaing ito ng karahasan ay isang mabigat na krimen at wala silang kawala sa batas. These acts of violence, the criminal acts that continue to be performed in the false name of brotherhood, will not be tolerated,” dagdag niya.
