The Philippine National Police (PNP) has advised the people to keep romantic and social expressions such as kissing, holding hands, and hugging, inside their own homes.
PNP spokesperson Idebrani Usana reminded the public to remain cautious as COVID-19 cases continue to increase.
Usana added that the ban on Public Displays of Affection (PDA) has always been part of the safety protocols against the virus since March of last year. However, the PNP will be stricter in ensuring proper social distancing by deploying more police officers in public establishments.
There will be no immediate sanctions on those violating the rule. Instead, they will be reprimanded by the authorities if they are caught in action.
Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto questioned the validity of this ruling. He urged the PNP to establish clearer protocols on PDA.
“If all acts of public display of affection are prohibited—harmless kisses, holding hands, hugs—then the rules border on the absurd” Recto said. “Ang bait naman ni COVID that it doesn’t harm couples making out in private.”
Last year, back-riding on motorcycles was banned by the National Task Force due to COVID-19. After three weeks, the ban was lifted for married and common-law couples who live in the same house. Despite this, Covid-19 cases continue to increase as the Department of Health reported that the Philippines has surpassed more than 600,000 cases since Tuesday.
