Palawan 1st District Rep. Edgardo Salvame passed away on Wednesday at the age of 61.

Salvame’s family announced his passing on his official Facebook page, although the cause of death was not disclosed.

“Sa maiksing panahon na siya’y ating naging Congressman, sinikap niyang gawin ang lahat ng kanyang makakaya upang magdala ng liwanag, tulong, pagbabago, pagmamahal at kalinga sa bawat isang Palawenyong kanyang sinumpaang tulungan. Siniguro niyang masimulan ang kanyang mga ipinangakong programa para sa bayan (During his brief stint as a congressman, he worked tirelessly to provide light, help, change, love, and care to every Palwenyo he vowed to serve. He ensured to launch every program he promised for the country),” the Facebook post read.

Salvame authored over 70 bills, a significant portion of which propose declaring various areas in the country as ecotourism zones.

He served as vice chairperson of the House Committees on Energy and Land Use.

In a statement, Speaker Martin Romualdez said Salvame’s demise created a “significant gap” in Congress, considering that the lawmaker was a “true advocate” for Palawan and a devoted public servant.

“I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of our colleague and friend, Palawan 1st District Rep. Edgardo ‘Egay’ Salvame. It is a personal loss for me and a huge loss for our community and the nation,” he said.

“His commitment, integrity, and ceaseless effort to advocate for his constituents have profoundly impacted all of us fortunate enough to have known and worked with him,” he added.

He highlighted that Salvame’s legacy is one of service and dedication to the betterment of others.

On a personal level, Romualdez described Salvame as a “trusted companion and a source of inspiration”, who left behind a “legacy of service that will be celebrated and remembered for years to come”.

“To Cong. Egay’s family, friends, and the people of Palawan, my heart reaches out to you. During this challenging time, I hope you find solace in the vast respect, admiration, and affection Cong. Egay garnered. His life was a testament to purpose and service, devoted to the betterment of others,” he said.

Romualdez urged his colleagues and the public to remember Salvame’s legacy by continuing his work that he was so passionate about and upholding the values he championed. (PNA)
