The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) continues its wide-reaching and intensive information and education campaign to achieve an inclusive digital economy under the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) project during the Marcos administration.

PhilSys aims to establish a single national ID for Filipinos and resident aliens.

The national ID shall be a valid proof of identity and a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrollment in schools, and opening of bank accounts.

It will also boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government services where people will only need to present one ID during transactions.

Through PhilSys, a secure, digital and interoperable platform, service providers are allowed to verify their clients’ identities using the Application Programming Interface (API).

The API-enabled authentication services include basic online verification, automated pre-filing of customer information in the system of the relying party, and generating tokens for seeding or storage of information.

The PhilSys project also aims to reduce fraud by cleaning databases of duplicate and fictitious records.

In a statement on Monday, PSA reiterated that a “robust and sustainable PhilSys project will be established by maintaining and continuing strong cooperation among stakeholders” through a whole-of-government approach.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte signed the PhilSys Act or Republic Act 11055 in August 2018.

The PSA has registered 74 percent or 68.3 million out of its 92 million target as of June 30.

To date, 13,859,229 physical cards have been delivered. (PNA)
