President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez as the new associate justice of the Supreme Court (SC), Malacañang announced on Tuesday.
Acting Palace spokesman Karlo Nograles confirmed Midas Marquez’ appointment, “I’d like to announce that the Executive Secretary confirms that Jose Midas Marquez has been appointed associate justice of the Supreme Court. Congratulations to Justice Jose Midas Marquez,” Nograles said.
The Supreme Court also released Marquez’s appointment letter through its social media page noted by the Office of the President and signed by Executive Secretary Salvador C. Medialdea dated September 27, 2021.
Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez replaced Associate Justice Edgardo delos Santos who opted to retire early in June.
Before being appointed as the 192nd SC justice, Marquez served as the 14th court administrator to withhold the position for over a decade since 2010.
Marquez served as spokesman and Public Information Office chief under former Chief Justice Renato Corona, who was ousted in an impeachment trial at the Senate in 2011 during the Aquino administration. He also supervised the court’s handling of the 2009 Maguindanao massacre case, where 58 died, including journalists.
Justice Jose Midas P. Marquez took his oath as the 192nd Associate Justice of the Supreme Court before Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo at the En Banc Session Hall on Tuesday, November 16.
