Representative Lawrence “Law” Fortun criticized the controversial murders of Police Senior Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca in Paniqui, Tarlac on Sunday.
“I condemn this dastardly act of a public officer mandated to preserve public order. Justice and the rule of law must govern our society,” Fortun said. “The suspect should be tried immediately and swiftly meted the penalty he deserves.”
Fortun then urged acting public officials and departments to initiate on resolving the national issue.
“I ask Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra to order the National Bureau of Investigation to take over the case,” he appealed.
“The Philippine National Police should waive custody and jurisdiction over the police officer. These moves would be prudent and legal. The investigation must be swift. Criminal charges in court must be urgently filed,” Fortun said.
“Congress must help eradicate the plague of police criminality and brutality. The PNP Internal Affairs Service should be transferred to the Department of Justice. All police criminality and brutality cases should be investigated not by the PNP but by the NBI,” he ended.
“Killer cop must be swiftly prosecuted”
Meanwhile, Representative Frederick Siao proposed that the suspect must be “swiftly prosecuted and stand trial.”
“Hindi dapat mamatay ang pulis na iyan na pumatay sa mag-inang Gregorio habang nasa kustodiya ng mga pulis because a quick death would be unfair to the victims and their grieving families and friends,” he said.
“That murderer must endure the full force of the law,” he added.
Siao also pointed out that Jonel should not get away with his crimes through convenient arrangements.
“Hindi rin dapat ma-areglo, idaan sa pera or pakiusapan, o pressure ang murder case na ito. The victims and their families deserve justice,” Siao highlighted.
What was supposed to be a decent discussion about the victims’ use of PVC pipe cannon or “boga” has turned into a crime scene after Nuezca gunned down a mother and son in Paniqui, Tarlac.
The incident was caught on camera and has immediately amassed public outrage against the police officer.
The video showed Nuezca gunning down two unarmed neighbours. The victims were 52-year-old Sonya Gregorio and her son Frank Anthony Gregorio, 25.
Nuezca has turned himself in and has double murder charges.
