Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel III sees President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s decision to transfer supervision of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) as crucial in providing more jobs for Filipinos and boosting their productivity.

Marcos signed Executive Order (EO) 5 on Friday ordering the transfer of the supervision of the TESDA from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to the DOLE whose secretary shall be the chairperson of the TESDA Board.

Calling it a “brilliant move,” Pimentel said on Saturday he fully supports the President’s decision.

“It is crucial for these two agencies to work together to address joblessness and productivity. Unemployment remains to be one of the biggest challenges that the Marcos administration should be able to address,” the lawmaker said in a statement.

“There must be synchronized efforts to address unemployment with DOLE and TESDA as the lead agencies. Hence, EO No. 5 augurs well in the efforts to address joblessness in the country,” Pimentel added.

Pimentel urged Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma to review TESDA’s proposed spending outlay for 2023 before the Senate tackles the agency’s budget proposal “to ensure that their policies are in sync with the end view of providing more job opportunities to the Filipino people.”

TESDA was created through Republic Act 7796 as a replacement for the then-National Manpower and Youth Council and the apprenticeship program of the Bureau of Local Employment under the DOLE.

Current TESDA Director General Danilo Cruz was a former Undersecretary for Employment and Manpower of the DOLE under former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. (PNA)
