Mariing iminungkahi ni Surigao del Norte 2nd District Rep. Robert Barbers na dapat repasuhin ang proseso ng pagpapatupad ng student visas kaugnay ng nakakaalarmang pagdami ng mga Chinese sa bansa.

Noong mga nakaraang linggo, naging mainit na usap-usapan ang dumadaming populasyon ng mga Chinese sa bansa. Ito ay matapos mabisto ang umano’y mga pekeng dokumento upang magkaroon ng Philippine residency para makapagpatayo ng negosyo.

Diin ni Barbers, dapat nang amyendahan ni Pangulong Bongbong Marcos ang Executive Order 285 ni dating Pangulong Erap Estrada na nagpapahintulot sa Bureau of Immigration (BI) na magbigay ng student visas sa mga dayuhang bibisita sa bansa.

“In today’s setting, this particular power by the BI can be abused. This arbitrary power to convert visas is the worst legalized scheme that can be used by unscrupulous personnel for monetary gain,” giit niya.

Sabi pa ng mambabatas, masyado na raw naabuso ang kapangyarihan na magbigay ng student visas sa ilang Chinese noong nakaraang taon matapos magtala ng 16,200 student visas na inaprubahan ng BI.

“Never mind if other countries grant more, we should never use that as our yardstick given our tense relationship with China,” dagdag niya.

Dahil dito, nanawagan si Barbers na magkaroon ng karagdagang proseso upang masiguro na naibibigay ang student visaS sa mga karapat-dapat lamang na makapasok sa bansa.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) should be the sole agency in charge of granting visas to foreigners. It alone possesses the expertise to determine whether the applicants are eligible or not.”
