Vice President Sara Z. Duterte personally visited flood victims in Barangay Bago Aplaya in this city on Friday.

In an interview, she said the Office of the Vice President (OVP) distributed financial assistance to the families affected by the widespread  and sudden flooding on Wednesday night.

Duterte is in Davao City for the signing ceremony of the Records of Discussion for the Comprehensive and Sustainable Urban Development Master Plan for Metropolitan Davao between the National Economic and Development Authority and the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Based on the assessment of the City Disaster Reduction Risk Management Office (CDRRMO), 127 families or 454 individuals were evacuated to safer grounds after floodwaters hit eight villages.

“We visited them, and we gave them financial assistance,” Duterte said.

She added that the OVP-Satellite office here will also conduct relief operations for the flood victims.

In a press briefing Thursday, CDRRMO chief Alfredo Baloran said that localized thunderstorm advisories should always be monitored as they indicate the general weather and the type of rainfall in particular areas.

“These localized thunderstorms are coupled with either moderate or heavy rainfall that we may experience, and they also come with strong winds and thunderstorms,” he said.

He asked Dabawenyos to stay alert, promptly check weather advisories, evacuate, and secure their safety if heavy downpour exceeds an hour.

He added that those who are located in low-lying areas near the creeks should closely observe the weather. (PNA)
