Ipinahayag ni House Speaker Martin G. Romualdez na ang Office of Transportation Security (OTS) sa ilalim ng Department of Transportation (DOTr) ay magkakaroon ng mas mahigpit na panukala para siguraduhin ang proteksyon ng mga turista at biyahero laban sa mga abusadong government personnel sa mga paliparan.
Anunsyo ito ni Romualdez kasunod ang isang pagpupulong sa House of Representatives kasama ang mga transportation officials na sina Transport Secretary Jaime Bautista, OTS Administrator Undersecretary Ma. O Ranada Aplasca at Manila International Airport Authority General Manager Cesar Chiong.
Kasama rin sa pagpupulong si Ako Bicol Party-list Representative Zaldy Co na chairman ng House Committee on Appropriations.
Para sa karagdagang proteksyon, binanggit rin ni Romualdez na napagkasunduan rin sa pagpupulong na ang piling personnel ng Philippine Coast Guard ay sasama sa airport screening personnel on duty.
Ipinahayag niya na nakakahiya ang mga kasalukuyang insidente na naganap sa paliparan, katulad ang insidente kung saan nahuling nagnakaw ang personnel ng OTS sa isang turista na galing sa Thailand.
“We cannot let this embarrassing incident fester and continue to discourage tourists from visiting our very beautiful country. But the OTS has recognized that there is indeed a problem and that it needs to be addressed at the soonest possible time,” ayon sa mambabatas.
Dagdag niya na imungkahi ng OTS ang paggamit ng mga body camera para makita ang mga gawain ng mga airport security personnel at immigration officer habang nagtatrabaho.
Kailangan ng OTS ng mahigit 500 body camera para sa kasalukuyang 1,200 OTS worker sa mga airports sa bansa na nagtatrabaho ng tatlong shift.
“The OTS also agreed to punish erring personnel and to put in place appropriate measures to stop and discourage illegal behavior of their staff. They recognized its existence and they decided to do something about it,” ayon kay Romualdez.
Dagdag rin niya na nais ibalik ng OTS ang implementasyon ng mga protocol na nagbabawal sa mga personnel na dalhin ang kanilang cellphone, bag o jacket habang nasa trabaho, at ang requirement na magsuot ng uniform na walang bulsa.
Dagdag ni Romualdez na iminungkahi rin ng DOTr at OTS ang pagkakaroon ng dagdag na mga e-gate sa mga airport para malimitahan ang personal na interaksyon ng security personnel sa mga turista at ibang biyahero.
Binanggit ng mga opisyal ng DOTr at OTS na isinumite nila kay Romualdez ang mga plano para sa panukala na makakatulong sa pagresolba ng problema.
“I hope this would somehow cushion any backlash from that embarrassing incident, and that tourists will still choose to visit the Philippines and not be discouraged by the act of erring personnel. We will monitor closely the corrective actions of the DOTr and the OTS to ensure all travelers in and out of our country get the honest and efficient service that they deserve,” aniya.
Ipinunto rin ni Romualdez na ang pag-eenganyo sa mga turista ay isa sa mga prayoridad ng gobyerno dahil ito ay mahalaga ngayong patungo na sa pagbangon ang bansa mula sa epekto ng pandemya.
